Preserving History in the Heartland: Naval Air Station Glenview Museum

The Naval Air Station Glenview Museum offers visitors a unique glimpse into the history of one of the most significant military airfields in the Midwest. Located in the Glen Town Center, the museum commemorates the vital role the station played in U.S. military operations from its establishment in 1937 to its closure in 1995.

Naval Air Station Glenview was a training ground for thousands of naval aviators during World War II. It became famous for its use of two modified aircraft carriers — the USS Wolverine and USS Sable — on Lake Michigan to train pilots in carrier landings, a critical skill that helped secure Allied victory. Many aircraft that ended up in the depths of the lake during these exercises have since been recovered and restored.

The museum features exhibits showcasing historic photographs, memorabilia, and interactive displays. A highlight is the museum’s detailed documentation of the station’s contributions to aviation history and its community impact.

“We’re dedicated to preserving the incredible stories of the men and women who served here,” said a museum spokesperson. “It’s a chance to honor their legacy and educate future generations.”

Admission to the Naval Air Station Glenview Museum is free, and visitors can explore its resources by appointment.
